Vachers of WestTytherley

This morning I began researching the Vacher family on behalf of my neighbour. Imagine my surprise to find two connections already!
My neighbour's link to the Vacher family is Charles born in 1851, son of John and Ann(e). In 1881, Charles is staying with his uncle William who owns a lodging house in Gower Street, London. He says that he's married but seems to be unemployed. I'm still trying to find his wife and family in 1881.
By 1891, Charles, his wife Christina born c1857 in Greenock, Scotland and family are living at no. 18 Linford Street, Battersea and Charles is working as a railway guard. My neighbour's grandmother can be seen in the 1901 census, Constance Rebecca Vacher born in 1899 and registered in Lambeth, Surrey. Constance married Ernest Martin in 1919 in Lambeth and had two children, Ernest C. (Charles?) Martin born in 1920 and Eila born in 1923 both in Wandsworth, Surrey.

Rcuhard and Elizabeth Vacher of Bere Regis

Dear Sir,

I have been researching my family history over the last 18 months and have found in the old West Tytherley cemetery, the graves of my great great great grandparents; Richard and Elizabeth Vacher, who died in 1849 and 1867 respectively. Buried with them is their son George who died in infancy (1828).

Richard had the occupation of Gamekeeper (according to his death certificate) and was described as a Truffler in the West Tytherley Parish records of baptism for his children; Catherine born 1826, George born 1828, Jethro born 1830, Henry born 1833 and William born 1834.

Richard and Elizabeth had moved, it appears, from Bere Regis in Dorset, with their sons John born in 1819, Richard born in 1822 and Charles born in 1824. We believe that Richard was born in 1794 at Milton Abbas, Dorset, and his ancesters go back to before 1661 according to the Milton Abbas parish records.

John, the eldest son (my great great Grandfather), married Ann Blake and their graves are next to Richard and Elizabeth's. There are quite a number of gravestones of the Blake family in the cemetery alongside St Peter's church. I assume these could all be relatives of Ann.

Three of John and Ann's children were born in West Tytherley (Richard b.1850 (my great Grandfather), Charles b.1851 and Susan b.1853).

From the various census records it appears that John and Ann moved to West Dean. They had a further six children whilst living there. At some point John is believed to have been a railwayman. The 1871 census of West Dean lists his occupation as Gamekeeper. By 1891 John had retired, he and Ann had moved back to West Tytherley, and lived on their own in one of the cottages. I would be interested to know if there are any records detaling which cottage it was and if it is still standing.

Regards,

Paul Vacher (Portsmouth)

I'm a Vacher too!

Dear Paul,

Your great great great grandparents, Richard and Elizabeth Vacher, and your great great grandparents, John and Ann Vacher, are mine too. You can imagine my surprise, coming across your Conversation Thread on the West Tytherley website, while researching my own family history.

My great grandmother, Catherine Vacher (b 1859) was sister to your great grandfather Richard. My understanding is that John and Ann had a further 10, rather than 6, children, after moving to West Dean : Ann b 1857, Catherine (as above), Eliza b 1861, Henry b 1862, John b 1863, Mary b 1864, Fanny b 1866, Rebecca b 1868, Dinah b 1869, and Louisa Rose b 1873.

The 1881 census gives John as a farm labourer in West Tytherley, and son Henry as gamekeeper. I can find no documentary evidence for John having been on the railways, though Catherine's husband Richard (Light) went from being an under gardener in 1881 to a railway porter in 1891, and thence to a railway goods warehouseman. Maybe that's where the idea came from?

I'm afraid can't really help with your cottages query. The only contemporaneous ones I've seen are the gardeners' cottages near Norman Court School, where Catherine and Richard lived while he was working on the Norman Court estate in 1881,and they are on private land. Whether John and Ann would have been able to retire there, I've no idea. The 2 entries on the 1891 census page prior to John and Ann's have the words 'Dean Road' and 'Common' in brackets after each. I wonder if that will help?

I don't know whether you would be interested, but I do have several photographs, - one is a copy labelled 'Grandad and Grandma Vacher' which I presume to be John and Ann, sitting outside in an unidentifiable garden. I also have one of John as a gamekeeper - complete with bowler hat! Also one of the Catherine (b 1826 and known as Aunt Kitty) who was sister to Richard and John, when she was an elderly lady. They are in 2 large Victorian photograph albums which have come down to me, but which are, frustratingly, full for the most part, of photos which are unlabelled. I would be happy to e mail them to you if you are interested.

You have, by the by, completely made my day!

It is a small world. My father's family came originally from Dorset and we have a Mary Vacher in our tree. She married one of the many Govers at Milbourne St Andrew in 1757!

John Vacher of Miltonabbas

Dear Paul

My great great great grandfather was John Vatcher. He was born at Milton Abbas in Dorset 1807. He married Martha Long of Maddington in 1833 at Salisbury Cathedral. On his second marriage certificate in 1871 he lists is father as Richard (deceased). John was a gamekeeper ending up at Stichcombe which is just outside of Marlborough in Wiltshire. I have a copy of the gamekeepers licensing record for a John Vatcher dated 1852, which list the Manors of West Tytherley, Broughton, Buckholt, East Dean, East Tytherley, Frenchmore, Norman Court, West Dean, Whiteparish. I don't think this is anything to do with me, as by 1852 my John Vatcher was living at Stitchcombe. I don't know if we link in with your family tree or not.

Hope this is of interest to you
