I have been researching my family history over the last 18 months and have found in the old West Tytherley cemetery, the graves of my great great great grandparents; Richard and Elizabeth Vacher, who died in 1849 and 1867 respectively. Buried with them is their son George who died in infancy (1828).
Richard had the occupation of Gamekeeper (according to his death
certificate) and was described as a Truffler in the West Tytherley Parish records of baptism for his children; Catherine born 1826, George born 1828, Jethro born 1830, Henry born 1833 and William born 1834.
Richard and Elizabeth had moved, it appears, from Bere Regis in Dorset, with their sons John born in 1819, Richard born in 1822 and Charles born in 1824.
We believe that Richard was born in 1794 at Milton Abbas, Dorset, and his ancesters go back to before 1661 according to the Milton Abbas parish records.
John, the eldest son (my great great Grandfather), married Ann Blake and their graves are next to Richard and Elizabeth's. There are quite a number of gravestones of the Blake family in the cemetery alongside St Peter's church. I assume these could all be relatives of Ann.
Three of John and Ann's children were born in West Tytherley (Richard b.1850 (my great Grandfather), Charles b.1851 and Susan b.1853).
From the various census records it appears that John and Ann moved to West Dean. They had a further six children whilst living there. At some point John is believed to have been a railwayman. The 1871 census of West Dean lists his occupation as Gamekeeper. By 1891 John had retired, he and Ann had moved back to West Tytherley, and lived on their own in one of the cottages. I would be interested to know if there are any records detaling which cottage it was and if it is still standing.
Regards,
Paul Vacher (Portsmouth)
