WHAT’S HAPPENING?

WEST TYTHERLEY APRIL 2004

PARISH COUNCIL

For your information this year’s precept will be the same as last year, as we have no plans for any major expenditure this coming year.

We have recently purchased more chippings for the play area on the recreation ground. We hope to put these down in the next few weeks. Any volunteers please phone Tim Mousley on 340773.

You may be aware that our community Police House has been closed recently, but at the last Lockerley Parish meeting we had assurance from Inspector Funnel from Romsey Police that the service will remain at the same standard as before, and he thought the response time of 45 minutes is quite reasonable!

Finally, I have had a request from a parishioner to flag up the litter situation in the village, can I ask therefore if you can all do your best to pick it up and bin it if you see it.

Many Thanks,

Andy Bowditch, Chairman

VILLAGE SHOP

As reported within the last news letter Peter Harris, has now left the committee to enjoy a well earned retirement.

I am pleased to report that Daphne Noyce has volunteered to take on the role of Secretary, and that John Coggan and Peter Bunting have agreed to join the management committee.

Regular users of the shop will no doubt have noticed the new security screens that have recently been installed. This action was forced upon the shop after a recent spate of attempted break-ins. A somewhat sad reflection of the times, and a reminder to us all, that even in our particular part of heaven, that we are all vulnerable.

Finally please support your local shop; the village would be a poorer place without it.

WEST TYTHERLEY FOOTBALL CLUB

The "Pigeons" currently lie in eighth place in Salisbury and District, Sunday League Division 2.

Their record to date is: won 7, drawn1 and lost 10, a somewhat indifferent performance, given the high hopes at the start of the season.

Perhaps a clue to the patchy performance is reflected within the goals for and against statistics: Goals for 49, against 68.

Nevertheless the spectators are not complaining, because the action is non stop, even if the majority of the goals are going in the wrong net!

NEIGBOURHOOD WATCH

Neighbourhood watch relies heavily on two things – close co-operation with the local Community Police Officers and information from those who love or work in the village. Cover from the Community Police Officers has been diluted in recent years because they have individually a much larger area for which they are responsible.

Shortly the police house in East Tytherley will lose its status as a station although the present resident, Chris Day, will continue to live there.

The most important and serious result of the change will be the loss of a very useful and simple communication link. Ringing 340375 invariably brings a reply – maybe not immediate but certain from one of our Community Police Officers, who, of course will know where you are and possibly who you are. In future the only option, apart from 999 for emergencies will be 0845 045 4545

You will be answered by a switchboard operator in Winchesternot a Police Officer – who will then ‘route’ your call. I imagine that the Constabulary views this change as PROGRESS; I view it as RETROGRESSION.

Your neighbourhood Watch Representatives, who are listed below, need you to tell them whenever you see something or somebody out of the ordinary, e.g. strangers acting suspiciously or strange vehicles parked in odd places or cruising with no apparent purpose. Tell him or her or me. We will then pass on the message to the Police and hopefully to our own Community Officer.

Apart from the regrettable incidents at the shop we have had little crime recently. That does not mean that there is not any lurking around the corner. So please, be alert, and remember that nothing untoward that you may notice is too trivial to be reported.

COMMUNITY POLICE OFFICER

I would like to thank the neighbourhood watch for its support to me in this time of change, I will still be the village beat officer with PC Andy Preston.  We can be contacted via the 0845 number or for those of you that have Email our personal Email address is as below. With regards to the Village Shop and a couple of other properties in the village I have highlighted these at force control room, so that any calls are automatically flagged up.  I have also asked that Wilts be informed at the same time so that we can try and apprehend the culprits.  Hopefully I will continue to see you all for the foreseeable future.

WEST TYTHERLEY C OF E (Controlled) PRIMARY SCHOOL

Where has the time gone since Christmas?  It is nearly Easter now and the summer is on its way.  The school has been disappointed at not getting the funding for the building extension in 2004/2005 but hopeful that it will still happen during 2005/2006.

This term Class 3 are going to Calshot Activities Centre, Class 2 have had a trip to Romsey via the train and Class 1 will be seeing lambs being born at Buckholt.

Our School Liaison Police Officer, Jane Taylor, left us this term to become a full time Vicar’s wife.  We wish her well - she will be much missed.

The new vicar, James Pitkin, has been thoroughly adopted by the children now.   We all look forward to him taking worship on Tuesday mornings and are always pleased to see him when he pops in for coffee when he is passing.  He has also very quickly become a valued and respected member of our Governing Body.

2005 marks the 150th anniversary year of the school opening and we are already working and planning many celebratory events.  So watch this space.  We hope that you will join us in 2005 to celebrate the history of West Tytherley Primary School.
