WHAT’S HAPPENING?

WEST TYTHERLEY APRIL 2005

WEST TYTHERLEY CE PRIMARY SCHOOL

2005 sees the 150th anniversary of the opening of the school.  This is a big year for us as we welcome the long awaited extension to the main school building and the removal of the old ‘temporary’ classroom, which has been with us now for nearly 40 years!   The plan is for the whole school to move into portacabins during the summer holiday and for the building works to start in September.   2006 should see us unveiling a ‘nearly’ brand new school.

To celebrate the school being at the heart of the village for 150 years, the community has joined together to form a committee which is organizing a village show/fete on 25th June.  The school PTA is also heavily involved and many of our wonderful parents are helping to organize an outdoor musical event in the summer, involving local talented bands.  The Bishop of Winchester is coming to a special celebration service in the Church on 17th July where we hope he will be able to present a special scroll.  I am also hoping to see some ex-pupils playing a football match on the 19th June, refereed by another ex-pupil, Roger East, (as long as FIFA don’t have other plans for him on the day!)  We hope that many of you will be able to join in and support these events.

This term we have been awarded ‘Healthy School’ status and the children are now doing 10 minutes of exercise at the start of the school day, enjoying fruit at breaktime and school milk has made a come back!  We have also become a Football Association Charter Standard School in recognition for our football development programme.

We would like to thank those people who help in school by listening to children read, helping with the school grounds or helping with after school clubs, your help is greatly appreciated.  We are always looking for more helpers, so if you think you could spare a little time, please let us know.

Can you help?

Every term we run several after school and lunchtime clubs for the children. These are run on a voluntary basis by teachers, parents, and other members of the community. The clubs are very popular amongst the children but we do not have the resources to run all the clubs that we would like to.

This term we are running clubs for drum, football, netball, computing, gym and science. The sorts of additional clubs that would be popular are:

Chess, draughts, card and board games

Tag rugby,  badminton, rounders, martial arts, tennis

dance, drama, cookery, art, handicrafts, music.

If clubs are not for you, then volunteers are also very welcome in the classroom, to listen to reading etc. This makes a big difference to the children’s progress.

If you can spare a little time and think you might be able to help please contact the Headteacher, Christine Bagley on 01794 340 338 for a chat.

You need no qualifications, just a little enthusiasm.
