WEST TYTHERLEY VILLAGE NEWSLETTER

APRIL 2007

PARISH COUNCIL

As you may be aware we have just completed two more projects on the recreation ground, which included replacing the hardwood chip bases to the play area which was costing approximately £600 per year to top up.

We now have a wet pour rubberised base which is maintenance free.

The second project was to remove the scrub hedge at the rear of Thorngate and replace this with a five foot fence. Not only is this tidier but gives residents of Thorngate privacy and security. We hope this is appreciated.

These two jobs were 100% funded with a lottery grant of £6,000 and a grant from TVBC of £4,755 for which we are extremely grateful.

For those of you who are not aware, due to the retirement of David Lyon, our new clerk is Lisa Koetser who may be contacted by email at lisa@t-k-systems.co.uk or telephone 01794 340973.

On a final note there will be a local election on May 3rd, please check notice boards for details. Anyone wishing to stand for Parish council please contact the clerk, any Parish councillor or Test Valley councillor.

Many thanks,

Andy Bowditch

Chairman

WEST TYTHERLEY VILLAGE SHOP

When our shop was set up, to take the place of a commercial shop which had closed down, it was staffed mainly by volunteers. The wages bill was very small and the shop was a success.

However, times change and for a number of years we have had no volunteers and operate with a full time staff. Our staff do a grand job but the wage cost is too much for our turnover to fund.

Our manager, Claire Burton, has suggested that if volunteers were willing to take over a small number of hours in the week this would be a considerable step toward achieving viability. There is no doubt she is correct.

Following on from Claire’s suggestion, Liz Dowding has offered to set up and organise  a “rota of the willing.”

If three, four or five Ladies or Gentlemen would take this on, the commitment could be as little as an afternoon or a morning every three or four weeks.

If you are interested in doing something tangible to keep our Shop and Post Office from joining the countrywide roll of vanished village amenities, and can find a little time please contact Liz Dowding.

WEST TYTHERLEY VILLAGE HALL

We kick off Spring with a Cabaret evening Broadway to Berlin set around the 30’s Berlin Kit-Kat Club with loads of well known songs - All That Jazz, New York, New York, etc.  So join us for a fun evening, bring a group of friends and make up a table of 8. It’s £12 a head to include supper and there will be a bar selling wine and real ale as well as soft drinks.  This is Friday April 13th at 7:30.  Tickets from Cynthia on 342432 or the village shop.

Something completely different on Sunday 20th May for all the family, a Treasure Hunt, in and around the village with loads of fun clues and a prize for the winning team.

Applications for grants have been sent in to help towards the cost of updating the toilets to include facilities for disabled, to improve access to under stage storage and improve emergency exits as well as re-decorating the hall.  We hope to have this work done during July/August ready for the autumn.

WEST TYTHERLEY CE PRIMARY SCHOOL

By the time you are reading this we should, hopefully, have reclaimed the newly refurbished ‘old’ part of the school and will be luxuriating in all the extra space that our new building has given us.  We can now offer:

FOOD TECHNOLOGY ROOM - A purposefully designed and well equipped area, complete with fridge freezer, dishwasher, oven, hob, sink and patio doors to the courtyard.

SPECIAL NEEDS ROOM – a quiet room for small group and one to one teaching.  This room has an interactive whiteboard.

MEDICAL ROOM – with sink and bed for poorly pupils and staff.

DISABLED TOILET AND SHOWER

LARGE ICT SUITE – 16 new computers (we are very grateful to the Sarah Rolle Trust for their generous donation) and an interactive whiteboard

LIBRARY – well stocked and with a computerised booking out system.

YEAR R WITHDRAWAL ROOM – for those times when Year R work together away from the rest of the infants.  This room will enhance play activity for our youngest pupils with an environment designed and equipped for their needs. For example, new furniture, plumbed in water tray, sink and plenty of imagination stimulating play equipment.

INFANT CLASSROOM AND TWO NEW JUNIOR CLASSROOMS – with interactive whiteboards, sink units and new furniture.

BRAND NEW RECEPTION AREA, ADMINISTRATION OFFICES, STAFFROOM AND PLENTY OF STORAGE CUPBOARDS AND SPACE EVERYWHERE.

The grounds surrounding the school will be newly landscaped, the playground is having new markings too and we have ordered brand new outdoor play equipment for the pupils.

Hampshire County Council have been very generous but those extra items, such as the kitchen appliances and outdoor play equipment, would not be included if it wasn’t for the money raised by our wonderful PTA.  Thank you very much to all those parents and friends who are members of the PTA and also to those who support PTA events and give of their money and time.  We really do appreciate it.

Of course a school, however wonderful the building, is only as good as its staff and we are blessed at West Tytherley with highly experienced, caring and dedicated people who work extremely hard for all our pupils.  Having wonderful surroundings can only complement their hard work.  This ‘family’ is moving into a new home and it is very exciting for all of us.

We look forward to showing it to many of you when we have the official opening at a BBQ evening.  Date to be announced shortly.
