WEST TYTHERLEY VILLAGE NEWSLETTER

DECEMBER 2007

PARISH COUNCIL

As you will all be aware, by the time you read this the consultation period for our responses to the proposed closure of the post office will be over, and I can only assume we will have, or shortly will hear the outcome. Thanks go to everyone who responded to the various parties with their comments both at the meeting on the 2nd of November and subsequently by letter, email etc.

As I have said before, now more than ever we should take this as a wake up call and support the shop by using it as much as possible or we will lose it.

On Monday the 12th of November we met with representatives from the village school regarding traffic problems, with both parent parking, general traffic speed and pedestrian access, it was agreed we with the school will approach Hampshire County Council with our ideas and suggestions for their action (or not)!

Now a request, we are looking for a person to take on the role of footpath warden, due to the retirement of David Lyon. You wouldn't have to attend meetings unless you wished but just send in a report of any problems, please contact me or the clerk if interested. Finally may I on behalf of the Parish Council wish you all

A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR

Andy Bowditch

Chairman

WEST TYTHERLEY VILLAGE SHOP

October saw the dreaded letter from the Post Office outlining the proposed closure of the Post Office; it was suggested that a 7-hour/week Outreach system would be offered as a replacement.  Following this news a meeting was arranged in the village hall for the community to voice their views and opinions.  I would like to thank all who attended and all those who subsequently wrote to the Post Office showing their disapproval at the Post Office’s proposal.  A special thanks to Hannah Mclaughlin for her valiant house-to-house tour of the village pleading for people to write.  In the meantime Andy Bowditch and myself had meetings with Sandra Gidley, your MP, who has shown her total support in trying to retain the Post Office here in West Tytherley as well as in Lockerley.  Whatever the final outcome the village certainly tried.

The shop serves the community and it is intended to continue with or without the Post Office.  The replacement dairy unit was installed in November; hopefully you have noticed how much quieter and more efficient it is.  However, the shop needs a spring clean and hence, come the New Year, the committee will be looking at ways to undertake this.

In the meanwhile, with Christmas and New Year to enjoy, on behalf of the committee and shop staff, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers for their support during the year and wish you all a very happy festive period.  Do remember the shop will always try to help with special orders or requests: just ask!  Also, there may be some reduced opening times over festive period; the shop will post notices and advise you as this becomes clearer.

Happy Christmas and a Merry New Year

WEST TYTHERLEY CE PRIMARY SCHOOL

We have now begun the countdown to Christmas!  The PTA, staff and pupils will be getting ready for the Christmas Bazaar on the 26th November at 6 p.m. in King Edward’s hall.  The children have been packing up their shoeboxes for the Operation Christmas Child appeal and the school entrance is overflowing with boxes covered in Christmas wrapping paper.  The rehearsals for the Christmas Music Hall and Melodrama on 11th December are sounding good and we look forward to seeing this and joining in with the carol singing afterwards.

The PTA has been busy raising money for the school as usual with a Halloween Disco for the children, the Christmas Bazaar and an evening with the Sulky Soul Sisters on 24th November.  We have also raised money for books by holding a book fair this term.  The School Council, which is made up of pupils from each class in the school, have organised fundraising events for the Children in Need Appeal on 16th November and they also hosted a lunch for the P.C.C. with a menu of roast beef and all the trimmings.

The school, the Parish Council and the Village Hall committee have all been working together this autumn to come up with some solutions to our road safety problems in the village.  We have submitted some suggestions to Hampshire County Council through a joint letter, which was put together after the P.C. meeting in November.  If you would like to know more about this, please speak to Andy Bowditch, Chair of Parish Council, myself at school or Graham Wright, village hall committee.

We will be holding our Christmas service in St. Peter’s Church on Wednesday 19th December at 1 p.m. when the infants will be telling the Christmas Story through a nativity scene.  You are all very welcome to join us.

If anyone would like the school newsletter emailed to them every week, please drop me a note at admin@west-tytherley.hants.sch.uk

KING EDWARDS VILLAGE HALL

Our commitment to bringing professional entertainment to the village continues and a very enjoyable evening was held with Instant Wit,  extremely funny and enjoyed by close on sixty people.

Forest Forge will be presenting their pantomime on Sunday 23rd December and in the New Year we have Circus Skills for all ages on 19th January 2008.

By popular demand on April 18th 2008 we have the return of Shoo Shoo Baby with their New Revue show.

As another year concludes, many thanks to all villagers for their continued support of the Village Hall and from the committee and myself all best wishes for the festive season and a very happy new year.

FEATURE ARTICLE - A NEW WEBSITE FOR WALKERS IN HAMPSHIRE

There’s no doubt about it, walking is good for you. It’s good for your heart, it’s good for your lungs, it’s good for the muscle and bone growth of your children and it’s good for your feeling of wellbeing! Strong scientific evidence now supports the many benefits to health of regular walking.

Walking offers a great way to help kids get the active habit. If parents express excitement about the prospect of a walk in the countryside, they are more likely to transmit this feeling to their children. It’s important to treat the walk as an exploration or adventure and to go at the child’s pace, no matter how often they want to stop and look at things; take treats to eat and plenty to drink; and head for some landmark that will appeal to them such as a castle, a playground, an ice cream van or a boating pond. If children experience walking as part of a fun activity they are more likely to want to go again.

www.walkinginhants.co.uk gives you all the information you need for the best walking in the county:

·      Guided walks local groups who offer guided walks together with their website links.

·      Books of walks – details of over 50 books of walks for the county.

·      Leaflets of walks – over ninety leaflets are produced around the county, you can download them easily from the site.

·      Walking groups – every walking group in the county is listed.

There are also links so that you can check: the weather for your walk, links to other useful sites, how to get to your walk by public transport – and more is being added all the time.

So check out the website and get walking!
