WHAT’S HAPPENING?

WEST TYTHERLEY JULY 2005

PARISH COUNCIL

In May we held our Annual General Meeting which was well attended, myself being re-elected as Chairman and Tim Mousley as Vice Chairman, with David Lyon as Parish Clerk.

The Precept for 2005-2006 has been set at £9,000. This includes £2000 towards an alternative play area surface as the cost of replacing chipping is now becoming a major expenditure i.e. up to twice a year. The last load bought in May cost £687.38! If anyone has any ideas of info for alternative surfaces, please contact our Clerk.

Our thanks go to Robert Horsford for donating his time for free as our auditor.

John Guy is still looking for volunteers to assist with the Parish Plan project. If you are interested, or to find out more, please contact him on 340946.

Finally, dog fouling is becoming an issue, particularly  at Chalkpitt Lane – Coopers track (by school) and the footpath behind Beales Court through Rectory Garden, please be considerate.

BLACK HORSE INN

Well, here we are again, now approaching our third year here and the seasons flying by as usual. Thank you to all our loyal regular customers and all those who pop in.

The furniture lorries seem to have had a busy time in the last few months running in and out of the village, so welcome to the newcomers and good luck with settling in. Don’t forget we are only a short walk away so come down for a summer’s evening drink or a meal on the enclosed patio or try a game of boules in the front garden and watch the comings and goings of the village. July is as ever, eventful, commencing with our Skittle Presentation evening on 2nd July with live music from Paul Weaver, all are welcome. Well done to the skittles winners, but come and try again when the season starts in Sept/Oct to all the skittlers.

Friday 15th July brings the return of The Morris Men, always a lovely traditional sight outside the pub and with good weather a sing-along on the patio after. On Saturday 16th July we are holding a race night, which some of you may be familiar with, so come along and book your Jockey, or owner, or even Sponsor a horse and join in the fun on the night.

Don’t forget, our skittle alley is available, particularly prior to the skittle season commencing, for parties, get togethers etc, just give us a call to discuss your requirements.

WEST TYTHERLEY C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Summer Term is always extremely busy and this year it has been even busier with the school celebrating 150 years of existence.  At the time of writing this we are about to embark on a week long Victorian event in school.  All pupils and staff are dressing up in Victorian costume and we will be enjoying a Victorian theatre experience, Victorian Sports Day, presenting a Music Hall extravaganza, visiting the Milestones museum and learning Victorian Dance too.  We are kicking the week off with a six a side football tournament on the Recreation Ground and ending the week with the combined Church and School Village Show followed by a musical evening with hog roast.  We are praying for good weather and hope that everything goes according to plan!

We have also been busy gaining a ‘Healthy School Award’ for our efforts in promoting a healthy lifestyle, through morning exercise, fruit at break time, school milk and healthier school meals.  We have also been awarded the Charter Standard from the Football Association for our work in promoting football at school.  We have had a visit from a lovely lady, Esi Hardy, who has cerebral palsy and spoke to our pupils about living with a disability.  The children had a brilliant art week before half term meeting local artists and producing a mosaic and three batik paintings. We received some funding from the Romsey Decorative and Fine Arts Society to help with the Art Week for which we were very grateful. We are expecting a visit from Councillor Neville Whitely, the departing Mayor and also the Test Valley in Bloom judges later in the term.   We also have School Grounds Day, Science Fairs, Book Fairs and Solar Car Challenges as well as participating in cricket, rounders, swimming, area sports and festival of sports tournaments against other schools this term.

On the 17th July we are taking part in a special Church Service at St. Peters, West Tytherley when Bishop Michael of Winchester Diocese will be presenting a scroll to commemorate our 150 years.  We would like to invite you all to this service which begins at 3 p.m. and to the Victorian picnic afterwards, which will be either in the school grounds or in the village hall (depending on the weather)

We would like to wish success and happiness to our Year 6 pupils who move on to Secondary School in September and also to the 13 new children who are joining us in the Reception class.  May we also say a big thank you to all those people who have helped the school this term, the support has been tremendous – THANK YOU.  Have a wonderful summer.
