WHAT’S
HAPPENING?
PARISH COUNCIL
As you
should all have seen, white lines have been painted along parts of North Lane
and The Village. This was recommended by the Highways Department as a traffic
calming measure, not as some people think as no parking. New street signs are
in the process of being erected to aid the emergency services. The details of
these measures were displayed on the Parish Council Notice Board opposite the
pub, please take time to read it.
Finally, for your info Parish Council
meetings are now held in King Edwards Hall always on the second Monday of each
month at 19:30 hrs, all welcome.

KING EDWARD’S HALL
The Hall committee welcome you to a Barn
Dance on Saturday 15th November from 8pm. Music is provided by
Pogles Wood Ceilidh Band and we provide the food (a ploughman’s), all for
£8.00. All you need to provide is your own drinks and a determination to make a
fool of yourself. Children of all ages particularly welcome but not too many experts
please.
A further event for children of all ages
is the Christmas Eve Pantomime “Cinderella”, performed by Forest Forge Theatre
Company. This will take place at 3pm and further information & tickets will
be available shortly. However Marion King has already started a list to book
tickets for this popular event.
I would also like to record the Hall
Committee’s thanks to those Badminton Club members who have done such an
excellent job in restoring the hall floor – well done.

Over recent months we have had a quiet time in the
village. Certainly over the last two months there were only 2
crimes. This month we have had a further two at Frenchmoor where the
building site is. If anyone saw any suspicious vehicles or persons hanging
around could they please contact either myself (Chris DAY or Andy PRESTON at
the Police Station. Now with the winter getting closer this is the time when we
start putting all our garden equipment away. Please make sure that you put it
all away securely, or it may not be there when you next need them.

VILLAGE SHOP
At the Annual General Meeting, held in King Edward’s Hall on July 17th 2003, Peter Harris announced his intention to retire from the shop committee, at the end of this financial year (January 04). As most of you will know, Peter was one of the main driving forces behind the creation of the village shop, when the original privately owned shop folded.
The loss of his experience, drive and energy (not always appreciated, it has to be said) will be sorely missed and hard to replace.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Peter on behalf of the committee and shop patrons, for his not inconsiderable efforts over the years.
Peter was one of the people with enough foresight to realize that the village would be all the poorer if it lost its shop, and who had enough about them to do something about it.
Peter has been one of the driving forces behind the shop, from its conception to its birth in Mike Fry’s showroom, to the Portakabin within the Hall grounds, and finally to the purpose built premises we have today.
Without his drive and resolve, it is doubtful whether we would still have the shop that we all take for granted today.
THANK YOU PETER, AND ENJOY YOUR WELL-EARNED RETIREMENT.
Which leads me to the question, is there anyone out there that feels that he or she could fill Peters shoes. If there is please contact any of the committee members and identify yourselves.
Indeed, the committee would like to hear from anyone who would like to get involved with the shop, which is after all a “Community Shop” and not a private enterprise. Whether it is to give of your valuable to time to serve on the committee, or even help out within the shop. We would be most pleased to have you on board.
The shop has been successful in its planning application to extend the shop. Whilst it is expected that the committee will implement the permission by erecting a new porch (decision to proceed, not yet ratified by the committee), it is not expected that a decision to extend the shop will be taken until a thorough business review has been undertaken. If and when the committee feel that the extension is a viable proposition, it will put the case to the shop members and patrons, to seek their views, before taking a final decision.
With the run up to Christmas just starting, please keep your eyes open for the “Special” promotions that the shop will be running.
Please discuss your Christmas
requirements with the shop staff, who will be only to pleased to assist you. Please do not forget that the shop
is able to obtain brand named “white goods” complete with manufacturer
guarantee, at prices below those of most superstores. Please ask shop staff for
details.

During the summer term, the school had an Ofsted
Inspection. We were thrilled with the
report, which confirmed that West Tytherley Primary School is a good
school. The summary report can be seen
on the village website, or a copy obtained from the school, and it is very good
reading. We received praise for the
attitude and responsible behaviour of our pupils, for the leadership and
management and for the teaching throughout the school. Since the last Ofsted in 1998 the school has
continued to improve and we are proud to be a part of such a wonderful village
school.
The
school came joint first in the Test Valley in Bloom competition and Mrs Bagley
and I went to collect the award from the Mayor at The Hillier Gardens, earlier
this term. The Mayor also came to visit
the school in October and enjoyed her visit very much.
The PTA work hard to raise funds every year to help
the school. Amongst the items purchased
with their help has been a software package for the library, which will
catalogue all our books and can be used in much the same way as the county
library. Each book is being given a bar
code and all the children will have their own library cards. The librarians (pupils) will be scanning the
books with a bar code reader when their fellow pupils wish to borrow a
book. It also means that if we are
looking for a book on a certain subject we will be able to search the system
and it will tell us exactly which shelf and which book contain the information
we seek. At the moment Mrs Louise
Falcini is busy entering all our books onto the system and we are very grateful
for her help. By the time this is
published we should be up and running.
Also, the school football team will soon be wearing a brand new kit of
green and yellow, once again courtesy of the PTA. Their next fundraising event is the Christmas Bazaar on the 21st
November at 6 p.m. All are welcome –
Father Christmas will be there!
As some of you will know we are hoping for an
extension to the school building in 2005.
This will coincide with the 150th Anniversary of the school
and we are hoping to arrange a major celebration for this event. As the school is such a big part of the
community we would like to involve the whole village and a meeting is being
arranged at the Black Horse, which will be open to anyone who would like to
come along and help with the organisation or to offer memories or memorabilia
of their school days. The date will be
confirmed soon (look for a poster in the shop) but will probably be Monday 17th
November. We look forward to seeing you there.
We would like to invite you all to an Advent Service
on Sunday November 20th at St Peters Church, West Tytherley at 10.30
a.m. Pupils from the school will be
taking part, including members of the drum club.
And on Monday 15th December the children
will be out and about in the village carol singing.

The new season got off to a somewhat disappointing start, with the pigeons losing their first game rather heavily 9 – Nil. However the manager is not disheartened and is reported as saying, “we showed enough in pre-season friendlies, to suggest that we have sufficient quality within the squad to better last seasons performance, we just didn’t get out of the “loft” today. I am sure that we will give a better account of ourselves in forthcoming games.”
Whilst the injection of cash (generated by the Family Fun Day), came too late to complete the big money signing, being widely speculated upon within the Black Horse inner circle. It is now rumoured that when the transfer window re-opens in January, the manager will renew his quest to bring a quality signing to the club. Those in the know are speculating that it may be a foreign import, possibly “Daffy Duck”, who is receiving great acclaim in the press at the moment, and is widely regarded as a “QUACKING GOOD PLAYER”.
On a lighter note, the club would like to express its most sincere thanks to all of you that came along and supported the recent “Family Fun Day”. We are pleased to say that the event generated a whopping £956 profit “THANK YOU”.
We must also express our gratitude to all of the
people who gave so freely of their time to organize and staff the event.
Without their most generous support the event could not have taken place. I am
happy to report that all of the helpers let their hair down, after the event,
and a very raucous night was enjoyed by all in the Black Horse.
